The 2021 Skylark Award
The 2021 Skylark Award was given to Anthony R. Lewis, one of the founders of NESFA, an occasional SF writer, and both a Fan (yes, with a capital “F”) and promoter of Science Fiction for more than half a century.
The 2022 Skylark Award opened for Nominations after our Annual meeting in May, and they will close at 23:59 on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. The 2022 Skylark recipient will be announced at the Boskone 59 awards ceremony on Saturday, February 19, 2022.
Regular members may place nominations in the Skylark Award mail box in the clubhouse, or email them to skylark@nesfa.org. Learn more here about the E. E. Smith Memorial Award.
The NESFA Clubhouse & Library begins to reopen
NESFA is pleased to announce our gradual reopening. Starting in June 2021, the NESFA Library reopened. Club members are welcome once again to browse the collection and check out books, movies, and other circulating items. Game and Video days at the Clubhouse have resumed. For now, NESFA and Boskone Business Meetings will remain via Zoom. For more information, please see our calendar (on the lower right of this web page).
- People who can be vaccinated must be vaccinated to use the clubhouse. People over the age of two are requested to wear masks while in the clubhouse as a courtesy to at-risk people. People are required to sign-in and sign-out using the register by the front door so we may track the use of the clubhouse.
- Keyholders should send a message to nesfa-active before going to the clubhouse to warn more risk-averse people that others will be present and to make sure there are no more than 24 people in the clubhouse at any one time.
- Keyholders may use the library at any time providing they don’t conflict with other clubhouse work activities. Non-keyholders may come in during open library hours. Open library hours will be posted to the NESFA calendar (at the lower right of this webpage). Up to 24 people at a time will be admitted to use the library depending on other work going on in the clubhouse, so you may wish to call ahead before arriving.
- Game and Video days will be by RSVP only to the person running the event. As with the use of the Library, up to 24 people at a time will be allowed to attend Game and Video days, depending on other necessary work going on in the clubhouse.
- If you have any questions, please call the clubhouse at 617-625-2311, leave a message if necessary, and someone will get back to you. Remember we are an all-volunteer organization and it may take several days for someone to get back to you.
New ebooks by Zenna Henderson
Ingathering: The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson, one of our best-selling hardcover books is now available in ebook format. And we now have its eagerly awaited companion book Believing: The Other Stories of Zenna Henderson in both hardcover and ebook format.
Dr. Who Days
Besides Game and Video Days, NESFA has started having Dr. Who meetups at our Clubhouse. Calling all Whovians, join us for our social & viewings of Dr. Who! We’re accessible by MBTA E Green Line Extension at Maguon Station & Buses #’s: 80, 89, and 101. The next one is on Saturday October 7th at 6 PM. See www.nesfa.org/events or Meetup for more info and future dates.
Public Transportation
Now that the weekend closures of the Medford Branch of the MBTA Green Line have ended for a while, it is worth mentioning that the NESFA Clubhouse is accessible by Green Line as well as by various bus routes.
GREEN LINE INFORMATION
The NESFA clubhouse is about 1/4 mile from the Magoun Square station on the MBTA Green Line. When exiting the station, turn left and walk north on Lowell St toward Medford St. The back door of the clubhouse is accessed via the driveway at 359 Lowell St which is on the opposite side of the street from the MBTA station. You may wish to walk around to the front of the building especially in cold weather as that driveway can get icy.
BUS INFORMATION
The NESFA clubhouse is served by MBTA bus routes 80, 89, and 101 which pass through or near Magoun Square (the intersection of Medford Street & Broadway)—just over a block from the clubhouse.

The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny Now Available in Ebook Format!
For many years, the 6-volume series, The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny, has been available in a durable hardcover edition. The NESFA Press is delighted to announce the release of these books in ebook format.
This series contains all the short science fiction of Roger Zelazny. Each story is enriched by editors’ notes and Zelazny’s own words, taken from his many essays, describing why he wrote the stories and what he thought about them in retrospect.
To purchase any of our ebook editions of The Collected Stories of Roger Zelazny, go to https://tinyurl.com/NESFAZelaznyEpubs (for the epub versions) or https://tinyurl.com/NESFAZelaznyMobis (for the mobi versions) or go to the NESFA Press website at http://nesfapress.org/available-books/ to see all of our books.

The NESFA Library
We are in the process of cataloging our library. We have cataloged our videos, our young reader fiction collection, and our main single-author fiction collection. We are currently working on cataloging our anthologies. Still to come is work on cataloging our art books, graphic novels, non-fiction, and audio books. The list of what we have cataloged so far is available at www.tinyurl.com/NESFALibraryCatalog. People interested in helping with cataloging should check the NESFA Events page, but we are cataloging most Wednesdays and Saturdays from Noon to 6 pm.
“Excess” Books
Looking for something to read? We’ve found lots of duplicate books while cataloging our library. Since we only have space for one copy of each book, the excess books are available for a suggested donation of $1-$5 per book. Stop by the NESFA Clubhouse when we are open which is generally Wednesdays from Noon to 9 PM, Saturdays from Noon to 7 PM, and most Sundays (but usually not the second Sunday of the month) from Noon to 10 PM. (Check the NESFA Events Page for our schedule.) The excess books are in the area by the back door to the clubhouse in two bookcases on the left wall and in boxes on the floor. New books from NESFA Press (on the metal shelves to the right) are also available at 20% off the cover price for non-members and 40% off the cover price for members.
Boskone Book: Wolf's Perils by Kelley Armstrong
This year we are pleased to announce our Boskone Book: Wolf's Perils by Kelley Armstrong - one story in two novels from the Otherworld Series together for the first time: Wolf’s Bane and Wolf’s Curse. This is a signed limited edition of 750 copies. This may be purchased at https://tinyurl.com/NESFAWolfsPerilsB62 for pickup at Boskone (you must be a Boskone member or have another member pick it up for you) with the traditional 40% discount off the $30 cover price plus sales tax. There is a link on that page to a second page if you want the book shipped after Boskone if any copies remain. The book will also be available for sale at the NESFA Sales table at Boskone (assuming any copies remain).
Note: Due to limitations in our system, you will need to specify a "Ship To" address even though you are picking it up at Boskone; if someone else is picking up the book for you at Boskone, you can fill in their name and your address there.
The 2025 Gaughan Award
The recipient of the 2025 Gaughan Award is Eleonor Piteira.
The Jack Gaughan Award for Best Emerging Artist honors the memory of Jack Gaughan, a long-time friend of fandom and one of the finest SF artists of the 20th century. Because Jack felt it was important to encourage and recognize new blood in the field, The New England Science Fiction Association, Inc., presents the Gaughan Award annually to an emerging artist (an artist who has become a professional within the past five years) chosen by a panel of judges.
The winner of the 2026 Gaughan Award will be announced in February, 2026 during Boskone 63, NESFA’s annual convention.
It's Not Just Science Fiction and Fantasy
Besides Science Fiction and Fantasy oriented events, NESFA hosts a couple of other community events at our clubhouse in Somerville. Blues Tuesy takes places most Tuesdays and Gender Free Scottish Country Dancing takes place on most "odd" Thursdays (1st, 3rd, and 5th) at the NESFA Clubhouse. Please see http://www.nesfa.org/events for more info and upcoming dates.
Second Edition of Dreamweaver's Dilemma by Lois McMaster Bujold
Dreamweaver's Dilemma is the Boskone 33 book (1996) by Guest of Honor Lois McMaster Bujold. It contains two novellas which have never been published before—the title story "Dreamweaver's Dilemma" and "The Adventure of the Lady on the Embankment"—plus the first appearance of "Mountains of Mourning," three of Lois's previously uncollected short stories, and four essays.
The book also includes an interview with Lois McMaster Bujold, a timeline of the Vorkosigan stories, genealogical notes, and a pronunciation guide by the book's editor, Suford Lewis.
The second edition is enhanced by bringing informational chapters up to date and including a short Codicil to the Biolog: Thirty Years After.
2025–2026 Short Story Contest
The NESFA Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Story Contest for 2025-2026 is now closed, for new submissions and has moved into the judging phase. The deadline for entries was October 30th, 2025. The winners will be announced at Boskone 63, February 13–15, 2026, at the Westin Boston Seaport District hotel, with a portion of the announcement broadcast virtually. Boskone usually includes a program item where Story Contest authors read their stories. Past winners are posted here.
Dubious Pleasures, by Greg Cox
Publishing physical books has become considerably more expensive over the years.
So, we are here seeking your support for our next project, Dubious Pleasures, the NESFA Press Boskone Book for Boskone 63. This book is a group of previously published short stories by Greg Cox, our Guest of Honor at Boskone 63, February 13-15, 2026. The cover art is by Charles Urbach, our Official Artist.
Visit tinyurl.nesfa.org/CoxKickstarter and support this project.
LAcon V & Geri Sullivan
Fellow of NESFA Geri Sullivan is a Guest of Honor at LAcon V, the 2026 World Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim, CA. Other NESFAns are helping run the convention, from Hospitality Division Manager Gay Ellen Dennett to Sharon Sbarsky, one of the Hugo Award Finalist Liaisons.
Boskone committee members and regular volunteers David D’Antonio, Anna Bradley, Gail Terman, and Terry Neill are also contributing their expertise. There are sure to be more NESFAns and Boskone regulars helping out by the time fans gather in Anaheim in August. One of Geri’s favorite things about Worldcons is that there are literally hundreds of ways to get involved that fit your interests and availability – before the convention and at it! Every little bit helps, and the big bits help, too. Find out more at https://www.lacon.org/ or by talking with fans at the NESFA Clubhouse on Wednesday nights.
